2009 Regional Tour - Eastern Washington
Day 1 - Tri-Cities
As we crossed into Eastern Washington, we stopped at the Wanapum Heritage Center to hear about the tribe's history and their involvement in archeology in Eastern Washington.
Columbia River Exhibition of Science, History and Technology
We learned about the Hanford Nuclear Site at CRESHT and heard some amazing oral histories from Herschel and Roland.
Kennewick Man with the Army Corp of Engineers
In the afternoon, we met with two representatives from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, Cultural Resource Archeologist Mona Wright and Public Affairs Specialist Joe Saxon, to discuss the Kennewick Man controversy. Mona shared with us some great resources on the debate and archeology and history in general:
- Information about the Walla Walla District for the US Army Corps of Engineers
- Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act
- Links to Kennewick Man studies and curation
Day 2 - Walla Walla and Spokane
Whitman Mission National Historic Site
We explored this early mission and received some great resources from Education Specialist Mike Dedman.
Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture
After the long drive to Spokane, the thoughtful interpretations at the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture allowed us to dig deeper into the history of Spokane and the Plateau Peoples.
Day 3 - Fort Spokane and Grand Coulee
Education Specialist Janice Elvidge put together amazing packets for our self-guided tour of Fort Spokane, looking at both the soldiers who were stationed there and the natives who attended the Indian Boarding School at this site.
We ended our trip with time at the Grand Coulee Dam Visitor's Center and a tour of the dam. The ESD 113 Media Center has several of the videos we saw at the visitor center for loan at http://media2.esd113.k12.wa.us/Media/qsearch.htx, or you can order individual copies from the online bookstore.
