2010 Final Workshop
We met for one final day, to discuss the passing of Howard Zinn (and his influence on the history profession) and to wrap up our four years together.
Friday, March 19
We began with discussing Howard Zinn's influence on the profession from three different points of view:
1) Oscar Handlin's review of A People's History of the United States from 1980.
2) Michael Kazan's article "Howard Zinn's Disappointing History of the United States" from 2004.
3) Henry A. Giroux's response to Zinn's passing "Howard Zinn: A Public Intellectual Who Mattered."
We discussed resources participants are currently using, including:
1) GPS kits from the ESD113 Media Center.
2) The Unfinished Nation video series, also available from the Media Center.
3) Resources for history education from Annenberg Media at learner.org.
4) Books on Foldables from Dinah Zike.
5) Gregory A. Smith and David Sobel's latest book Place- and Community-Based Education in Schools, which gives concrete examples of how to implement place-based education initiatives in local schools.
We also talked about ways for participants to continue their professional growth, like:
1) Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling's Center for Community Engagement and Greg Smith's Place-Based Education Summer Institute Sustaining Places and Communities: Educational Innovations.
2) The Freedom Writers Foundation.
3) The new Environmental and Sustainability Education Specialty Area Endorsement.
