Our Place In History

Course Information

Teacher Involvement

The middle and high school teachers who participated in "Our Place in History" met regularly throughout the school year for professional development activities aimed at using their local communities and local history to illustrate themes in American history.  Teachers were compensated for this involvement through opportunities for professional credit, an annual stipend, professional association memberships, a variety of classroom materials, and support from content experts.

 

Teacher Activities
Summer Academy: Two five-day content-rich sessions with embedded pedagogy and a full-day field trip to regional sites.

Fall Regional Tour: Four-day bus tour of the region guided by content specialists

Seasonal Workshop/Field Trips: Workshops and field trips throughout the school year combining history content, pedagogy, and historical research

Monthly Study Groups: Group meetings with peers

Additional Classroom Support: Visits from TAH Mentor and access to online collaborative workspace


Participating Teachers Compensation

  • Certification clock hours (pending)
  • Over $1500 a year in stipends
  • Professional association memberships
  • Five teachers to attend the NCHE annual meeting
  • Classroom resources
  • History and education texts
  • Support from content experts and ESD staff and cohort
  • Connections to other practitioners
  • Improved classroom lessons
