2008 Winter Workshop

We met at TESC-Tacoma for our workshop on the African-American experience in the West and in Tacoma.  Our course participants also continued to develop their projects, as they developed their rubric and negotiated their groups for the rest of this year.

 

Friday, February 8

Resources

Dr. Artee Young introduced us to the work at TESC-Tacoma, especially Dr. Gilda Sheppard and Dr. Peter Bacho.

 

TESC-Tacoma staff use Judith Barrington's Writing the Memoir to guide their memoir writing process.

 

Nancy mentioned Richard Slotkin's work on the history of violence in the West, particularly Regeneration of Violence: The Mythology of the American Frontier, 1600-1860.

 

James Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, will be speaking at Evergreen's Day of Absence - Day of Presence on Wednesday, February 13, at 10:00am at the Campus Recreation Center, Back Bay (preregistration required) and at 7:00pm in the Longhouse.

Saturday, February 9

Tacoma Urban League

President Emeritus Thomas Dixon spoke with the group about the history of the African-American community in Tacoma and the Hilltop area, as well as several community organizations and initiates, including the Black Collective and The Conversation.
